How to NOT move a venomous snake

While our most popular training course is our Venomous Snake Safety and Handling class for professionals. Professionals also need to know when to NOT move a snake. It is always safer NOT to handle a venomous snake. Know when to handle and when NOT to handle.

So, when does a snake NOT need to be moved or handled?

• If the snake is on a trail or within its natural habitat (e.g. Open Space or Park). If a snake is on a trail, yes it can pose a danger to hikers and passersby- but that does not necessarily mean it needs to be moved. It is less dangerous and better for the snake if a Park Ranger monitors the area instead and gives the snake space and time to move along. 
• If you do not have a plan for relocation or your state prohibits handling or relocation. Know the rules in your city or state. Snakes have a low survival rate when relocated, so know the best practices.
• During severe weather conditions that may produce power outages. If there is an accident, you may not have access to proper medicine.
• If you are ill or otherwise impaired. Obviously
• Substance use. Obviously
• Mentally distracted. If you have doubts or are mentally distracted, accidents are more likely to occur.
• If you are alone. Always work with a partner in case an accident happens.
• Captivity recommendation: Within one hour after “lights on”. For those who work with snakes in captivity, make sure you not operating early in the morning or at night, when you are more likely to be tired.
• Lack of proper equipment. If you forgot your gaiters or do not have proper equipment, do not try to do with whatever you have. Make sure you are prepared.
